Did you know the popular weekly journal Nursing Times has a website?

Nursing Times is the UK’s leading independent nursing weekly magazine. We publish original nursing research and a host of clinical articles for nurses at all stages in their career, as well as professional and clinical news and opinions. We also bring you the best selection of nursing jobs.

You can access much of the material from the print version on the Nursing Times website for free. Some articles are summarised so you may still wish to read the full article in print (we have copies of the latest Nursing Times at Burton, Walsall and Wolverhampton Learning Centres), or you can take out a personal subscription via the website if you want your own copy (there’s an offer for students at the moment to get 12 copies for £12). There are also job listings on the website, as well as a community area with forums, blogs and debates.

Royal Marsden Clinical Nursing Procedures available online

Royal Marsden Clinical Nursing Procedures

As mentioned earlier on the blog, we have recently paid for online access to the Royal Marsden Clinical Nursing Procedures (you will need to log in with your IT account if accessing off campus). This is now available and ready to use – you can get to it from the above link or from the Databases A-Z page.

You can search across the whole resource for a particular procedure, or you can browse by topics which match the chapters in the print book. Browsing enables you to go directly to specific content, procedures, or figures. You can also download figures (for example if you would like to use them in your assignment).

Today (12th May, anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth) is International Nurses Day to celebrate and remember all the valuable contributions nurses make to society.

New clinical practice resources

We’ve just received details of two new evidence-based resources which can be used in clinical practice to diagnose and provide information on conditions.

CKS

The Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) are an online source of practical, evidence-based and up-to-date knowledge about the common conditions managed in primary and first contact care. CKS covers around 200 ‘top-level’ clinical topics on common acute and chronic illnesses and disease prevention, and provides information on how to manage more than 500 clinical situations or scenarios. Each topic is structured around real-life clinical questions about management, diagnosis, complications, prognosis, incidence/prevalence, risk factors and causes.

DynaMed™

This clinical reference tool was created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use primarily at the point of care. With clinically-organized summaries for thousands of topics, DynaMed is the only evidence-based reference shown to answer most clinical questions during practice. Based on the results of a study published in Annals of Family Medicine (November/December 2005), not only did primary care clinicians answer more clinical questions with access to DynaMed than without DynaMed, but these clinicians also found more answers in DynaMed that changed clinical decisions.

Reuters Health Database

The subscription for the Reuters Health Database is due for renewal at the end of  January 2009.   Looking at the usage statistics, 310 accesses for the February 2008-December 2008 period and the cost of £4,900 per year, the department will not be renewing the subscription.

Study Skills Bookmark Links

The Learning Centres have just launched a one-stop link for all things “Study Skills” on the social networking bookmark delicious.com. The link is http://delicious.com/LISStudySkills .  You will also find a link from the Study Skills pages of the Learning Centre webpges.

Here you will find useful tip sheets covering writing, grammar, IT, and numeracy skills. A majority of the links are University of Wolverhampton owned, but we have cherry-picked some sites from other HE institutions.

To access the sheets:
